As we have
communicated to you previously, our sister local, IBEW 2304 is continuing to
work on negotiating a new agreement with MG&E. They are currently
working with a contract extension. Today, July 25, 2006 they are
negotiating with MG&E in an effort to reach an agreement on a successor
agreement. The main issues in the struggle are pension, wages and medical.
In their quest for taking it out on the workers, MG&E wants to shift from a
defined benefit pension to a 401(K) based pension. MG&E is also trying
to force members to switch health care providers by making some of the current
participating plans to out of network providers. The Union’s concerns
with wages is to get an adjustment to keep up with the cost of living increases
and equity adjustments for those classifications that are lagging the industry. MG&E
is one of the utilities in the state to be negotiating their contract. A lot of
their struggles are the same issues all the utilities in the state are going to
see. All of us need to stand firm with local 2304 and help them in anyway to
come up with a contract deserving of their members. Many of
our members have asked how they can help in this struggle. This Thursday
evening, July 27, 2006 there will be a solidarity rally held at the |
