As we have communicated to you previously, our sister local, IBEW 2304 is continuing to work on negotiating a new agreement with MG&E.  They are currently working with a contract extension.  Today, July 25, 2006 they are negotiating with MG&E in an effort to reach an agreement on a successor agreement.  The main issues in the struggle are pension, wages and medical.  In their quest for taking it out on the workers, MG&E wants to shift from a defined benefit pension to a 401(K) based pension.  MG&E is also trying to force members to switch health care providers by making some of the current participating plans to out of network providers.  The Union’s concerns with wages is to get an adjustment to keep up with the cost of living increases and equity adjustments for those classifications that are lagging the industry.

MG&E is one of the utilities in the state to be negotiating their contract. A lot of their struggles are the same issues all the utilities in the state are going to see. All of us need to stand firm with local 2304 and help them in anyway to come up with a contract deserving of their members.

Many of our members have asked how they can help in this struggle.  This Thursday evening, July 27, 2006 there will be a solidarity rally held at the Madison Labor Temple beginning at 6:00 pm. in room 109.  We are all invited to come and show our support for our Union Brothers and Sister at IBEW 2304 and better understand their struggles and how we can help them. We are asking that all 965 Brothers/Sisters try to make it to the meeting.
