May 23, 2006 Dear Sisters and Brothers: As everyone is probably aware Alliant Energy through a variety of hiring freezes and budget cuts, have reduced their workforce dramatically over the last ten to fifteen years. And I am sure everyone is also aware, that a large portion of the current workforce is likely to retire in the next five to ten years. This can and will be a major problem for the customers of Alliant Energy if this problem is not addressed soon. There are other factors that compound the problem. Most of the other Utilities nationwide have chosen the same route, strip back the workforce and ignore the aging workforce issue. Because the Utilities have not hired the education system has suffered by the lack of jobs in the industry therefore the younger generation has no interest in pursuing education where no jobs exist. There needs to be a strategic, comprehensive plan to address this crisis. Local 965 have contacted Alliant on numerous occasions to address this problem. Recently we also sent a report to Alliant Energy on Strategic Workforce Planning developed by the Utility Workers Coalition. This report can be found on our website at http://www.ibew965.com/utility%20workers%20coalition/Utility%20Worker%20Coalition.PDF Because this is a PDF file and 162 pages in length, you will need adobe and a high speed internet connection to open this document. Please take some time to review the document and share any questions or comments with us.
Fraternally Yours, Shawn Reents Business Manager and Financial Secretary |
